(That's Out-Of-Character for those guessing)

I made a decision today that's somewhat out of sync with my accepted view of myself. I'm not sure how the choice is going to turn out, but I guess I'll find out soon enough. Some long while back someone on here mentioned Cuddle Party (I believe it was [livejournal.com profile] greymaiden?). What's that you ask? Well, as the website says, "Cuddle Party is a playful social event designed for adults to explore communication, boundaries and affection". Random strangers, trying to find out a little bit more about themselves, and about exploring things in our "increasingly touch-phobic" (to quote the site) society. The idea had a certain level of appeal, but this was way back. I'd mostly ignored it overall, because it was in the USA, and I'm not. But that's changing, for a brief while in the near future, and given as New York is the first city they started this whole thing in, and I'm going to be there for a few days, I'd been querying the organisers about what dates they were going to be having these things, with a consideration towards going to one of these things. Of course, this being me and getting organised, I'd delayed until today to email my RSVP, and so I'm now on the "wait list" for October 29th, which may well mean that I don't get to go (they try to do things like gender balancing at these things, and so depending on whether they can sort it enough to get down to my place on the list, I may or may not get an invite).

Even if this all works out, I'm still a bit apprehensive here. I'm not exactly what you could call touch phobic, but this thing is still a fair distance outside anything I've ever done before. I've spent a lot of time over the last few years (re)considering a number of my overall choices and options regarding who I am and what I (don't) do, but I've not really made much in the way of jumps like this. Shrug knows how I'll react to one of these parties even if I do get to go along. I don't think I'll freeze, but this is going to be complicated. But it's something I want to do. I suppose I'm only obeying Clarke's second law - "The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible". Only thing is, the impossible keeps changing.

(In other news, my copy of "The Atrocity Archives" turned up. It's very fun. Lovecraftian horror mixed with a spy thriller, science-fiction, computing references, and bits of norse mythology)
Mood:: 'thoughtful' thoughtful
Music:: Electric Six - Fire - Naked Pictures(Of Your Mother)

When I was in massage school, we had those cuddle parties almost every day! Going through massage training not only let me become comfortable touching others, but it helped me be more open to others touching me. However, I would say I'm ultra-sensitive to touch that is out-of-bounds nowadays. I get vibes off of people pretty easily and if someone's intentions are less than where I want them, I'll feel it. That may sound weird and vague and hippy-ish, but I've had it happen a lot. I think because I'm aware of how important touch is, I respect it more and I am less apt to touch someone without a reason for the touching. Let us know what it's like if you end up going! I'd be interested to hear it.

Well, if that doesn't work, I'll drag you around (well, if you want) for a bit, bwa ha ha. Do you want to do touristy stuff, artsy stuff, or hanging out and trying new things stuff?

Hmm.. all of the above sounds pretty good! I've got basically 4 days to play with - getting in Friday 28th ~midday, but between my body clock being about 6 hours ahead and having to get through the first stages of US customs (Visa waiver program still means I need to get the whole biometric shit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Visitor_and_Immigrant_Status_Indicator_Technology) dealt with, which creates *massive* queues), I may be able to do things later on on Friday, but dunno.

Therefore, we have Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Aside from the CuddleParty thing (if it works out), I definately want to get around to visiting MoMA this time, but otherwise I have no plans. Any ideas, especially anything along the lines of seeing NYC through the eyes of a local ;-) are heavily welcomed.

MoMA is awesome on Friday nights, based on the fact that admission is free from 4 pm - 8 pm (admission is steep - $20 - but I believe they have a student discount of ~ $12.50 regularly). There are a few other famous museums a short train ride/long walk away (the Met, the Guggenheim, etc.), as well, but I don't know if you'll be up to it - museum-going can be tiring!

Monday I have class from 9 - 11 and work from 2:30 - 7:30, and I pretty much have to go to work, although I can miss class if you want to do something in the morning (since I have perfect attendance in the class thus far and Monday is Halloween).

My email address is icutyou[at]gmail[dot]com, if you'd like to exchange contact info. My cell phone is going to be out of commission for a few weeks, so this shall be fun.

It was me, and if you end up going I'd be very interested in how things go :)

Either way, enjoy New York! (And if you make it anywhere in the vicinity of Maryland whilst you are in the states, let's do lunch. . .have your people call my people. . .)

Unfortunately I'm nowhere near Maryland this year. Was in Baltimore last November for a couple of days for the conference that I'm going to again this year, as they switch coast each year (they're in San Diego this year), maybe they'll swing back that way next November. Given I went to the last one, I'm going to this one, and we're intending to get a paper to the 2006 one, odds are I'll be there again next year...
