What's an extropian/ transhuman? Not taking the piss for once, I'm genuinly interested. But I do see what you mean about the eating animals/ Flesh Fair thing. Although as an animist I'm not so sure about the phrase 'less than sentient'

"Various ppl managed to get off with one another (including Susanna and Alex"
Which Alex? And if it's the one I live with, who's Susanna? >:)

Best starting point would be the WTA (http://www.transhumanism.org/) (World Transhumanist association homepage). Start with the declaration and the FAQ, that should explain a lot. Technically its something I've agreed with for years, but only found out about others who agreed with me at some point in my first year, and only started mentioning this to others in the last calendar year or so.

Yup, it's the one you live with. Susanna is a random person I know via Rocksoc. She's from Australia, over here for a year. Her degree over there is something like "media communications" (arty), there's no direct equivalent over here, so doing a bunch of random art modules. Punk fan, likes piercings (long conversation with her at some point where she tried to persuade me that I should get one. Given my opinion there is roughly "if i have stuff put into me, it'll be augumentation, *not* ornamentation" - a very transhumanist viewpoint incidentally). Nice girl. Photo of her here (http://www.bits.bris.ac.uk/palfrey/images/display.php3?image=collection/people/Halloween%202002/rocksoc/Dscf0038.jpg&back=/people/Halloween%202002/rocksoc%26start=1)

The whole use of non-sentients thing is kinda a hideously fuzzy area. Right now I think I'm doing a whole bunch of things that I can't actually properly morally justify (like eating meat), but until I work out a lot more stuff about my personal moral outlook, then I'm not going to change my existing habits. Once I get things worked out, I may well change a lot about the way I do things. Most of the choices I want to make aren't possible yet, which is kinda a bitch tho. For a rough guide to where I'd like to end up, start with "Lobsters" (http://www.asimovs.com/_issue_0206/Lobsters.shtml) (but without the kinky ex-wife). The concept of turing-completeness applied to legal documents is something I've been thinking about recently for example... :-)

*reads FAQ* I only had time to skim read, but that's very interesting. I can't say I agree with a lot of it or would want it myself, but it's still interesting. Personally I think that humans need to do a lot of spiritual catching-up before whizzing off with the technology again, but as a philosophy it makes sense.
