There are a number of things i've been missing while I've been away from England. Proper sausages, medicines that don't try to kill you, my friends, that sort of thing. I've bitched about most of this. Things I haven't mentioned up until this point are things that I'm really not missing. One of those would be carol singers,
raygungothic's recent post having just reminded me of their existence.
Couple of notes on this
1) I am explicitly *not* blaming
raygungothic for their re-appearance in my head, as I wouldn't wish to do anything to change his recent run of good moods (Bad luck on that book BTW, such is the nature of research... shit happens my friend). My hate of them is not based on their simple existence.
2) Despite having once had a vast crush on Amy, I wouldn't have walked in that door. OTOH, I have lower limits regarding the friendship/religion thing, and simply would have told her a polite version of things like this, and that therefore I would not be attending.
3) I live on the 8th floor of a tower block now, and therefore maybe I'm high enough up to a) not hear them and b) stop them from reaching my door
Why do I hate carol singers? Is it the religious nature of their songs? Not really I think. I have two different versions of "Spirit in the Sky", and provided I don't listen to the lyrics too closely can avoid wanting to do something violent and bloody to the singers, as it actually has a pretty good tune. What pisses me off is the combination of the relentless god-bothering chirpiness combined with an opinion that *everyone* wants it shoved down their throats. May I be the first to utter "fuck off and die"! If I choose to go a church and listen to this stuff, I have made a personal choice that I wish to hear the music. If I'm sitting in my house, I haven't chosen to like the same stuff as you like. Would you like it if I turned up at your door and started playing bad renditions of bits of random punk bands at you? (for those of you thinking you might like this option remember that a) I have a bad singing voice and b) *no* musical talent) No, I haven't, and no I wouldn't, because it would be incredibly fucking rude. And yet, I'm supposed to stand, listen, grin and give money to charity for these fuckers.
/me fires up the heavy-duty LART.

Anyway. Glad that's out of my system. For those of you offended, please remember to go out once in a while and smell the sarin. Here's a quiz

You are an Akira-class Battlecruiser, every ship
should be like this. You are very versatile
and can be trusted to perform any task with
excellence. Powerful, agile, and graceful.
You, my friend have it going on.
Which Class of Federation Starship are you?

Ah, but that's the problem. I'm sure it was beautiful, and in fact I'd be pretty bloody foolish to reject all religiously inspired art (be it painting, music, poetry... whatever). I don't have to be a Christian to appreciate Pearl as one of the greatest heights of Middle English poetry, or be awed by a Renaissance altarpiece. But I'm only interested in the stuff in a secular context. I'm very much interested in churches as architectural works of art, but even knowing that I'm missing some small part of the point by only visiting when they're not in use won't drag me to a service. Carols are similar, but the religious element in their appreciation is much larger - they're nothing outside a church.
My religious position is not quite so rigidly defined as yours, which was why I thought it was flexible enough to allow me to attend an event that, socially and even aesthetically, I did want to. That simply turned out not to be the case. Unfortunately, this conflicts strongly with an image of myself as someone who doesn't let friends down - hence the guilt.

So can we have a liiiitle bit less Christian bashing, lads, they're not all bad y'know.

They're not all bad, heck most of them are pretty ok folk. Live and let live works for most people, including me most of the time.
