I tend to think of dogs as barely domesticated wolves with a desire to separate me from bits of my anatomy (especially the little yappy ones - I can keep my fear *mostly* in check up until dogs bark). They terrify the crap out of me, and I regularly have to cross roads to get away from the blasted things.

Cats OTOH are honest - they mildly tolerate humans until someone develops a can opener that can be operated with a paw. But they're adorable (http://tevp.net/images/display.php?image=/cats/parents/July%2017th%20001.jpg) and fun and they have curiosity about things (as opposed to the slavish drooling mess that appears to be the average dog thought processes). Ok, yes it's possible for the cuteness to go too far (http://tevp.net/images/display.php?image=/funny/catz/cuteness.jpg) but in general I'm a very pro-cat person.

Small yappy-type dogs, in Eddie Izzard's phrasing, are thoroughly irritating. And there are definitely many breeds of dogs that have been developed to be stupid and slavish. But smart, properly trained dogs are fantastic.

Cats are basically wild animals that put up with people because they give them food and shelter. This doesn't necessarily imply intelligence. In standard animal intelligence tests (being able to recognise their own reflection, follow a sequence in order to get food, etc), most breeds of dogs turn out to be much brighter than cats. Purebred cats are mostly dumb as hammers.

I may be biased in this in that I've never been hurt by a dog. Cats, on the other hand, will scratch and bite the hell out of you on almost no provocation at all. Dogs are to bees as cats are to wasps.

I've also never been harmed by a dog, and I have been scratched by a cat on one or two occasions. However, I have been chased around bits of furniture by dogs on occasion as well having had my bike pursued by a little yappy bastard, and those both bothered the crap out of me much more than being scratched by a cat. And quite frankly, cats usually have a good reason (or at the very least are telegraphing very clearly their intention to do so if you don't leave them alone) for scratching/biting people. At least with the domestic ones in my experience.

On relative animal intelligence: agreement in the differing amounts of intelligence, but I like the reactions of kitty minds more - they've always seemed more 'nice' playful to me. Also, what would you rather in your house? A stupid predator whose primary interest is small mammals (smaller than even human infants) or a smart one who has varieties that can easily take down an adult human (noting that no-one sane keeps large cats in their house)? I'm voting for the amusing small cuddly ones.
