Thing I forgot to blog about last week, and just got reminded of: had a really weird experience with a sudden cloud of little sparkly things appearing in the air in the middle of my office. Things of note here: they persisted for ~20-30 seconds, officemate couldn't see them, they went blurry when removing glasses. Given the last item, it was probably an actual physical phenomena and I'm probably not just going nuts. Alternately, some unknown reason is causing phosphenes (maybe I need to tweak my screen settings somewhat) *or* I'm just high on my own neurotransmitters. As this was a one-off (well, I haven't seen things like it for a few years) I'm not worrying too much.....

Yesterday in my Egyptology class we stumbled along through an obscure but important stela, until we came to a word for which the lecturer struggled to provide an English definition... "It's a bit like jewellery or regalia, but it can include weapons... and armour... so that's not right... and his clothes if he's well-dressed..." then gave up and suggested "his shiny stuff".

And I thought "Shiny things! Shiny shiny!" :-)

I shall have to see about making you an icon with the Egyptian for "My shiny stuff"...

Sounds like a very useful word to have! *nods* Yay! for shiney Egyptians!

By the way, did you enjoy the Egyptian bunny?

Reading him is very hard work, but yes! Thank-you!

Hmm, I used to get things like that when I was a kid but haven't for a while now. Is a very odd experience.

Sounds like an occular migraine to me, a friend of mine gets them especially if she's been using a VDU a lot. Unlike regular migraines, you don't always get pain, just visual disturbances like the one you described, or tunnel vision or bits of your field of vision blurring out. It's the same mechanism of blood vessels cramping up and limiting the oxygen supply. If it starts happening regularly and/ or gets worse and/ or starts to hurt, go to a doctor about it. I think hers went away when she went on meds for her normal migraines, but if yours are only mild you may be able to control them other ways.

Also, could be wise to get the the optician, you can never be too careful with your eyes.

Thanks. I think that remembering not to move too close to the screen will probably help, especially as I haven't seen anything quite like this one before (have seen some other odd visual phenomena before, but not for several years). If it happens again, will definately go and see a doctor.

I think that's the first time this millenium I've heard someone use VDU (admittedly, I'm still using the term "core dump" which refers to even older technology, but this being computing we're only talking 1970s for when that became obsolete)

Oh bite me, tech boy :) They've been banging on about health and safety at work, and not sitting to near to the afformentioned devices which were consistently refered to as VDUs, so I assumed that was still the proper term.

What do I know, I'm a biologist :) We know shit about science and technology.

Yeah, I second the seeing a doctor if they keep up. Could be just low/high blood sugar, overcaffeination or something more ominous. Or...fairies!!

Get yourself to an optician, stat.

Could be your prescription needs updating, or blood sugar issues (type 2 diabetes for example). In either case, a proper eye examination will pick that up.

On a related note I was getting terrible headaches a few weeks back. I went for an eye test and sure enough my prescription had changed a bit. £130 and new lenses later, and I have only had one headache since.

Of course, it could be someone pointing a particle accelerator in your general direction, or just the evil shiny pixies...
