I have this bad habit with big event stuff that takes at least several days and my blogging about it later. I want to, I've got the photo sets to go with it, but it keeps getting delayed. I've *still* got ~2 weeks of notes from last summer that I'm aware I never wrote up, and that bugs me (don't worry, I don't plan on doing those). And, then later on I've got other stuff to talk about and I feel that I can't becuase I've got that other stuff to talk about that I haven't yet. So, (partially) in order so I may talk about wonderful Coot videos/pics and fangirling the usage of the term "palfrey" within an episode of Gilmore Girls, I bring the details of my latest American adventure.

'k, now that last post is out of the way, here's the other stuff in my head:
  • Gilmore Girls and "palfrey": (ep 7x06, "Go Bulldogs!") Lane mentions it to April as one of her "seven letter words that sound made up but aren't" for use with Boggle. Gets defined as "It's a saddle horse for a woman", which is about right. This results in me going "Palfrey! Hah!" at my computer screen, which was meta-amusing in itself.

  • German concept of "simple": I've spent fair chunks of this week dealing with ripping apart what was meant to be a series of basic "simple" modules of code written by some of our German EE colleagues in a collaborative project. They were nowhere near simple (needs a value for the speed of light and radio frequency in order to work out whether a packet gets from point A to point B? Yeah, not simple), and have now been appropriately rewritten. I expect to be hearing screaming over email when they see the commit emails for that on Monday, as this time (after bad experiences with them and design-by-committee) I've decided on the forgiveness rather than permission route.

  • Department away day: Once a year they drag our whole bunch of CS people out into the real world and make us do something out there for a day. This year, Thursday was an "activities day". Couple of hours of disc golf and "mountain" biking (they built some fair-sized hills just north of Rotterdam), and I've escaped pretty much unscathed. Trashed a bike pedal, but didn't actually fall off, which given the slopes and the quality of the paths was surprising. Photos at some point.
