Went out last night with ppl, went to Pitcher and Piano (would have been Lloyds but for some arseiness with stupid staff that I missed totally), then ended up at Revolution. Never been there before, not bad, would recommend the "Del Boy" cocktail - it's mostly pineapple and pretty good.
Onto the content (as mentioned in the title here). I've been learning recently that I can bullshit like a king about art. I have enough knowledge so that I probably won't get caught out too badly. If all else fails, nodding and smiling tends to work quite well. Was talking with this girl last night (flirting? possibly at most, given she smokes, and therefore my interest is limited to say the least....) and somehow the conversation got onto art. I was asked what I like, and I got onto abstract stuff, and trying to think of an artist in particular, came up with Kandinsky. (The time it took me to think of him was allowable because we appeared to have a satellite lag across the table....) Now, as I looked back at this, this was an exceptionally good choice. Kandinsky is not an artist known to the great unwashed generally, but also not too obscure so that the other person won't have heard of him. This means you can both go (in your heads) "yes, I know him. good artist. i have art knowledge! wahey!", which is usually all that is needed in these situations. Detailed conversations about art outside of galleries only ever happen if there's a painting in front of you, and so you can always take the painting apart - criticism is easy enough....
Being able to pull off little things like this is essential for my image, as otherwise I just get categorized under geeky CS - not that there's much wrong with that, but then you get pigeonholed and interesting conversation tends to vanish, so you need other stuff to talk about. All of this just amused me quite a lot, *sigh* I have an odd sense of humour.
Time to bugger off and cook flapjacks.....
