It's run by a bunch of former internal LJ folks, and is intended from the start to be an LJ replacement, not just another LJ site, plus they've also got the experience in knowing what does and doesn't work with these sites. So, for example, I've been able to import all of my old LJ entries into Dreamwidth. They're also actively doing a whole bunch of development on the LJ codebase, and fixing a bunch of long-term issues that were present in LJ (there's a list of them here), so it's not just a clone, it's more of a fork.

Also, in contrast to LJ's increasing policies of "screw you", they're going with a bunch of pretty good guiding principles, and a fairly kick-ass diversity statement
